탐험은 인간 본성의 근본적인 호기심을 충족시키는 활동이자 오늘날 우리 삶을 풍요롭고 충만하게 만드는 근본적인 추진 동력이기도 하다.
개별 탐험의 이익은 정확히 측정하기 어렵지만, 탐험이 없는 인간의 삶을 쉽게 상상해 볼 수 있다.
만약 탐험이 없었다면, 우리는 아직도 사바나의 평원에 머물러 있을지도 모른다.
우리는 지구라는 안락한 울타리를 넘어 달이나 우주로 나아가려는 시도를 꿈도 꾸지 못했을 것이다.
탐험이 없으면 오늘날 우리가 당연하게 여기는 과학적 발견, 기술의 발전, 그리고 우리 자신, 생물, 환경, 및 우주에 대한 깊은 통찰은 결여된 채로 살아가고 있을 것이다.
결국 탐험이 없는 인간의 삶은 무지, 정체, 그리고 진보의 부재로 특징지어질 수밖에 없다.
엄지회는 지적 호기심을 바탕으로 우리 주변을 탐험하고, 나아가 자아를 발견하며, 가능성의 경계를 확장하는 분들을 교육하는 일에 앞장서려 한다.

Exploration is both an expression of humanity’s innate curiosity and a powerful driving force that enriches our lives today.
While it may be difficult to quantify the direct benefits of individual explorations, it is easy to imagine how impoverished human life would be without them.
Without exploration, we might still be confined to the savannas.
We would not have dreamed of venturing beyond the comfortable bounds of Earth to the Moon or outer space.
Without exploration, many of the scientific breakthroughs, technological advances, and profound insights
into ourselves, other life forms, the environment, and the universe that we now take for granted would not exist.
In essence, a life without exploration would be defined by ignorance, stagnation, and the absence of progress.
